I offer the following three services: copy editing, developmental editing, and proofreading. Although the general definitions for copy editing, developmental editing, and proofreading are widely agreed upon throughout the editing community, the specifics can differ from one editor to the next. In order to minimize any possible confusion, I have described below what I am looking for when I am copy editing, developmental editing, or proofreading.

That being said, please feel free to let me know if you have any questions or if you would like me to include something in one of my edits that is not covered in a specific section below. My number one goal is to help you, and I want your editing experience to be as smooth and as stress free as possible!

Developmental Editing is usually the first type of editing a manuscript (MS) goes through in the editing process. It focuses on the bigger picture, and when I do a developmental edit, I make notes throughout the MS and then also write up a summary of any issues that are found throughout the MS and are not just specific to certain chapters. With this type of editing, I am looking at (please note that this is not a comprehensive list):

• Plot flow
• Pacing
• Tone
• Dialogue
• Imagery
• Character development

Copy Editing is usually done after developmental editing in the event that the MS undergoes a substantial overhaul during the developmental edit. It focuses on the details of a MS, the language and style of writing, the nitty-gritty that makes your story shine. With this type of editing, I am looking at (please note that this is not a comprehensive list):

• Spelling
• Grammar
• Punctuation
• Formatting
• Word choice
• Consistency

Proofreading is the last step before the MS is sent off to publishing companies, literary agents, or whatever platform on which it is being self-published. While this step is very similar to copy editing, it is more of a final pass to catch any remaining typos or mistakes:

• Spelling
• Grammar
• Punctuation
• Formatting
